Choosing Between Black or White Data Center Cabinets
For more than twenty years, gunmetal gray or standard black was the color associated with data center cabinets. The year was 2015 when the first light gray and white data cabinets became modern options. There has been much controversy over light and dark colors for data center cabinets. There is now sufficient evidence to prove that lighter reflections have a positive effect on the overall efficiency of the data processing center.
4 Reasons for Choosing White Data Center Cabinets
1. Reduction in Lighting Costs
White data center cabinets help maintain overall data center energy costs lower. Environmental lighting reflections from completely white data center cabinets result in 25% to 30% savings on energy consumption for lighting. Black does not reflect light efficiently, which means higher energy costs for lighting solutions.
According to information from cabinet manufacturers, white cabinets have a light reflection value (LRV) of 80% compared to LRV of black cabinets which is only 5%. To put it in simpler terms, white cabinets provide 16 times more ambient light compared to black cabinets. That is why the requirements of the Directive in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) indicate that light colored cabinets are preferable to darker colors. The LEED 's primary role is to help data centers become energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
2. Improved visibility
The most obvious result of choosing white cabinets is that they give better visibility inside the cabinet. Staff no longer need to use a flashlight or headlight to get a clear view of what is going on inside the cabinet. There are more chances to miss something inside a black cabinet. The data center does not have to carry the additional costs of custom lighting inside the cabinet.
Employees can easily read labels off the appliances inside white cabinets without opening the door. There is a higher chance of human error in reading machine labels inside a black cabinet. A simple mistake could cost the data center valuable resources.
3. Better working environment
4. Cleaner walks
It is difficult to differentiate the amount of dust on a black cabinet if it has not been cleaned for a long time. The dust has a detrimental effect on the efficiency of the electronic equipment in a data center. Black cabinets can keep dust and other dirt hidden from view. Dust is easily visible on white cabinets which helps the cleaners to carry out their duties easily.
