Update 01/11/2022: GitHub clarifies that the 30% figure of AI generated is related to some languages, and not all code on the platform.

GitHub announced the AI-supported code-writing feature called Copilot back in June. On the night before a Launching today’s GitHub Universe conference, the company said the AI is now helping to write 30% of code on the platform.

In an interview with Axios, Oege de Moor, VP of GitHub Next - the team working on the copilot function - said that 50% of the devs that tried it have kept using it.

The feature is still at a technical preview level, and works particularly well with such languages Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Ruby, and Go.

The company is now extending features to new code editors starting today, so even if you use another development environment, you can still take advantage of AI GitHub:

We are expanding editor support to include Neovim IDEs and JetBrains, particularly with a focus on the latest versions of IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm. Support for multicast completion in Java has also been added, with support for more languages over the coming months.

GitHub has built this feature using OpenAI Codex, a database built on public sources, is more efficient at generating code than GPT-3.

Codata, another tool that offers AI - based code completion, said last year that it helped you write 25% less code - and over a million developers they were already using it.

However, this AI is not yet as nimble for generating complete programs on its own. But it makes it easier for developers to spot errors and complete their projects in a shorter time.
