Jeff Bezos apparently was not satisfied with just flying through space. The second richest man in the world now wants to take over.

Blue Origin at Bezos on Monday announced plans to build a commercial space station by the end of the decade.

The Orbital Reef project will be developed in partnership with Sierra Space, a subsidiary of the Sierra Nevada Corporation defense and aviation contractor.

Both companies describe the initiative as a "mixed-use business park" in space for both companies and tourists. They both boldly say that Orbital Reef is "the main commercial destination in Earth's low orbit".

A clear motivational video for the projects shows a CGI station made up of spacious modules, large windows overlooking the Earth, an exercise space, and thriving space gardens.

If the project's engineers can reproduce their animation, Orbital Reef could be a great place to see the world burn beneath.

I expect Bezos to turn the station into a private feature that he rules as emperor. He controls the media, staff, entertainment, and trade in the land. A bit like on Earth, but even stronger, and more interesting for Jeff because he's in space.

Bezos is receiving substantial support for the project. In addition to the previously announced partnership with Sierra Space, the initiative is supported by Boeing, Redwire Space, Genesis Engineering Solutions, and Arizona State University.

Blue Origin may do with all the help it gets. The company has yet to launch an orbital rocket, not to mention an orbital space station.

Update (12:00 PM CET, October 26, 2022): This article previously described Jeff Bezos as the richest man in the world. This was a mistake. Elon Musk recently overtook Bezos to reclaim the title of the richest man in the world.

The error has now been corrected. We apologize to Musk for neglecting them, and extend our sincere condolences to Bezos.
