Net Business Conversion is the only way to beat Net

Gus a climate catastrophe, the whole world needs to change the way it does business. It is difficult to overestimate the level of movement required. We need new ways to grow food, make things, move around, generate electricity, and heat and cool our buildings, all without emitting greenhouse gases. What the world needs right now is something new, clean business turnover, until we reach net zero by 2050.

That is an ambitious goal, but it is achievable. I think three things will happen in 2022 that will accelerate the necessary transition to a clean economy.

The first is that climate change will remain a top priority. This may sound like a no - brainer, but in reality it represents a break from the past. After the 2008 recession, censuses showed that climate change fell far short of the list of priorities for voters around the world. In this crisis, however, climate change is not taking a back seat. Even in areas devastated by the pandemic, young people, activists, shareholders and workers will be accountable to government and corporate leaders for making real progress.

Second, business and political leaders around the world are responding to these demands with tough plans to eliminate emissions. This will also be a break from the past, when governments and corporations could make silly promises, feeling that little was done to solve the problem. Those days are gone.

In 2022 and beyond, companies will receive credit not only for investing in sustainability, but for making the right types investments - especially those in clean technologies that will reduce future emissions. Investors will accelerate the shift away from climate change-contributing technologies, building on a global shift that has seen private capital invest more and more in energy mobility, growing to $ 500 billion (£ 361 billion) in 2020.

Investors will also give more rewards to companies that are taking bold steps to finance technologies that we need to reach zero, but have not yet been used - technologies such as clean hydrogen, direct air capture, storage long-term electricity and sustainable air fuel. These investments will be driven by better tools, such as the Emerging Climate Technology Framework developed by the Nonprofit Carbon Publishing Project (CDP), which measures the the impact of today's clean energy investments on tomorrow's emissions.

We also see the private and public sectors using their purchasing power to create new markets for clean products - such as pledging to buy electric vehicle fleets, using cleaner steel and cement for their construction projects , and get more electricity from carbon - free sources. . As consumption of these products increases, their markets will mature, spurring innovation and driving down prices.

The more governments and companies get involved in eliminating emissions, the more they need to partner with others. So my third prediction is that we will see the rise of new ways of working together.

Governments and the private sector will create new operating models so that we can build the markets for these products and accelerate the transition to a clean economy. One example is the work that the European Commission is doing with Breakthrough Energy, a network of investment vehicles, philanthropic programs, and advocacy efforts that I set up. Over the next five years, Breakthrough Energy and the European Commission will move up to $ 1 billion (£ 722 million) to build large-scale commercial demonstration projects for climate technologies, generating the learning necessary to meet cost solutions new. Even more partnerships like this one will emerge in 2022.

I am excited for the year ahead, and I believe that we are just at the beginning of a revolution powered by the next generation of clean technologies. The challenge ahead could not be greater, but the seeds of the zero - economy are being sown all over the world.
