The next AirPods Pro may support lossless audio

Now that the third generation AirPods offer some of the same features as the AirPods Pro, how does Apple make the high - end wireless earbuds stand out? By further improving audio quality, apparently. according to 9to5Mac, renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple is launching its second-generation AirPods Pro in the fall with support for Apple Lossless Audio (ALAC). There is no voice support for other lossless formats, unfortunately, but the rumored update would at least ensure that you can listen to Apple Music (and ALAC songs stored locally) without influencing quality.

Kuo also expects the updated AirPods Pro to offer a “new format factory design.” You may not have to worry so much if you lose your earbuds, either - they will introduce a prosecution case that can make noises, similar to AirTags. You may only need to find your 'buds' to find them on the pavement.

It's not sure if or how Apple would support its lossless format due to Bluetooth data pipe limitations. However, acoustics company VP Gary Geaves recently announced What Hi-Fi in an interview that his team would like "more bandwidth," drawing on the potential of new technology. Apple may not add to or replace wireless standards like Bluetooth, but it could develop a codec in LXless Lossless style to enable wireless ALAC.

But as sure as Kuo would be, we would not count on support without loss yet. The confirmed launch is still several months away, and Apple could postpone or delay plans. With that said, an update strategy like this would make sense. While the AirPods Pro still has advantages such as active noise cancellation and silicone eartips, the latest standard AirPods are much closer in terms of sound quality and features (such as spatial audio) while offering more battery life longer. The Pros are currently only really good value when you find them for sale. Lossless music, a new design and a softer case could help justify a higher price.
